Possible Hazards from Near Earth Objects

The event will be an open meeting in the afternoon of Friday, 28 November 2003. It will take place in the Hall of the Central Municipal Library, Ethnikis Aminis st. There will be simultaneous translation in greek and english. The rough schedule will be:

  • 16.30: Greetings
  • 17.00: First panel: Possible hazards from asteroid impacts: origin, predictability and risk.
    The panel will consist of:
    Professor I. Hatzidimitriou, University of Thessaloniki
    Professor H. Varvoglis, University of Thessaloniki
    Professor I. Williams, Queen Mary College London
    Dr J. Davies, Royal Observatory, Edinburgh
    (Presentations of 20 minutes each, plus questions)

  • 18.30: Coffee

  • 19.00: Second panel: Possible hazards from comets and man-made objects: risks from collision, injected material and debris.
    The panel will consist of:
    Professor N. Spyrou, University of Thessaloniki
    Professor M. Bailey, Armagh Observatory
    (Presentations of 20 minutes each, plus questions)
  • 19.45 "The UK Information Centre on Near Earth Objects".
    Presentation by Dr K. Yates, Project Manager, NEO Information Centre.

The UK scientists will arrive the previous day and will depart on Sunday, 30 November 2003.

Audience will be students, amateur astronomers, members of the local authorities and the general informed public. The level of the discussion is geared to them, so this is an "understanding science in society" meeting, not a strictly scientific one.
