1. Short News

We would like to congratulate Dr. Styliani (Stella) Kafka who recently accepted a position of Director of the American Association of Variable Star Observers (AAVSO), starting February 2015.

We would like to congratulate Dr. Vassiliki Pavlidou, Assistant Professor of Theoretical Astrophysics at the University of Crete, who recently received one of the three 2014 l'Oreal-UNESCO Women in Science awards. The award, which also includes a 10,000 Euro prize, was established in Greece in 2006 and recognizes scientific excellence among Greek female scientists up to 38 years old, who work in the fields of life sciences and natural sciences.

2. 12th Conference of Hel.A.S - registration open

We remind our members that the 12th Conference of Hel.A.S. will take place in Thessaloniki (June 28 - July 2, 2015). Online registration is now open for the meeting. Please check the web-site http://www.helas.gr/conf/2015 regularly for updates.

3. Hel.A.S. on Twitter (reminder)

We remind our members that Hel.A.S. is on Twitter as of last month. Please "follow" us at "@elaset_tweets".

4. The Gruber Foundation (TGF) Fellowship Programme

TGF awards one Fellowship for 2015, which amounts to US $50,000 and will be given as a stipend covering travel, subsistence and research expenses supplementing a postdoctoral appointment at the host institution, starting no later than 1st October 2015. The Fellowship may be held in conjunction with any other fellowship or award. The Fellowship will be awarded to an extremely promising, young astrophysicist, working in any field of astrophysics, either theoretical, observational or experimental. Applicants in the last months of their PhD, having already made successful contacts for a post-doctoral position, or post-docs in their first year of appointment, are encouraged to apply. In the case of applicants at the PhD level, the PhD must have been awarded by the start of the Fellowship, i.e., not later than Oct. 1st 2015. There are no limitations on nationality, but, while the scientific quality of the application is the prime criterion, preference will be given to applicants from countries in difficult economic conditions. The deadline for applications is March 1st. More information can be found at:

http://www.iau.org/science/grants_prizes/gruber_foundation/fellowships/

5. Postdoctoral and PhD positions (ESA project at IAASARS/NOA)

The Institute for Astronomy, Astrophysics, Space Applications and Remote Sensing (IAASARS) of the National Observatory of Athens announces several openings in the framework of the ESA program "Hubble Catalog of Variables" and invites applications for the following positions: (i) two postdoctoral research positions on identifying and characterizing variable stars in the Hubble Source Catalog; (ii) one postdoctoral research position with expertise in programming or a software engineer; (iii) several PhD positions, on projects related to identifying and characterizing variable stars in the Hubble Source Catalog (HSC). Applicants with previous experience in stellar variability (detection algorithms, light curve analysis, characterization of variables), photometry, HST data or a related field are particularly encouraged to apply. The deadline is December 15, 2014. For more information please visit:

http://www1.astro.noa.gr/en/jobopenings/

6. PhD opportunities at UCLAN

The Jeremiah Horrocks Institute for Mathematics, Physics, & Astronomy, at the University of Central Lancashire, UK, is pleased to announce the availability of several new STFC- and University-funded PhD Studentships (for UK and EU students), as well as opportunities to study for the degree of MSc by research. Applications are now invited for the October 2015 postgraduate intake. Studentships cover tuition and living expenses. For informal enquires on projects in theoretical star and planet formation, please contact Dimitris Stamatellos (dstamatellos@uclan.ac.uk). For more information about the possible projects please check:

7. Postdoc and PhD Positions (University of Tuebingen)

The Institute of Astronomy and Astrophysics at the University of Tuebingen (IAAT) has an opening for a Postdoc and two PhD positions within the Emmy Noether Research Group "Accretion flows and feedback in realistic models of massive star formation". The successful applicants will carry out original research in the field of Massive Star Formation working in the Emmy Noether group of Dr. Rolf Kuiper. Emphasis lies on the (radiation-/magneto-)hydrodynamical and chemical evolution of jets, outflows, and accretion disk around massive protostars. Applicants with previous experience in numerical modeling will be favored. For a description of the research activities of the IAAT please visit:

http://www.tat.physik.uni-tuebingen.de

The focus of research of the Emmy Noether group lies in the field of massive star formation and the physics/ chemistry of jets, outflows, and accretion disks. The appointments are funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG) and paid according to German public service scale. Starting dates are negotiable. The University of Tuebingen seeks to increase the fraction of female scientists in research and teaching and particularly encourages applications from women. Disabled candidates are given preference if equally qualified. For further enquires about the positions, please contact Dr. Rolf Kuiper (rolf.kuiper@uni-tuebingen.de).

8. UPCOMING ASTRONOMY MEETINGS IN GREECE

The 1st announcement of the Thessaloniki Workshop on Binary Neutron Star Mergers (see below) was recently issued. Note that the deadline for Abstract submission is January 20, 2015.
