1. SHORT NEWS

We wish to congratulate the distinguished member of our Society, Academician Professor Stamatis Krimigis who was recently awarded The Smithsonian’s National Air and Space Museum Trophy for Lifetime Achievement (2015).

2. 12th Hel.A.S. CONFERENCE -- ABSTRACT SUBMISSION

We remind our members that the deadline for Abstracts Submission for our Conference is April 24. Please make sure to submit your abstract by that date through the web-site ( http://www.helas.gr/conf/2015/abstract.php )

3. 2015 BEST PhD THESIS PRIZE

The GC is pleased to announce its decision for the 2015 Best PhD Thesis Prize. We had the pleasure of reviewing a number of excellent candidates, all of which had conducted high-level research and published in well-respected journals. After careful consideration, the GC unanimously decided to award the Prize to

Dr. Maria Petropoulou

Dr. Petropoulou received her PhD from the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens in 2013, her Thesis being in the area of High-energy Astrophysics. Dr. Petropoulou is currently working as post-doctoral researcher at Purdue University, having received the prestigious "Einstein Fellowship".

The GC would like to congratulate Dr. Maria Petropoulou and wish her a very successful scientific career.

4. CONFIRM YOUR MEMBERSHIP ADDRESS

All members of the Society are strongly encouraged to visit the online membership directory Hel.A.S. (available in English as well as in Greek) in order to verify that their personal information, including postal address, e-mail and phone/fax numbers, is correct. If you notice a mistake on your record, or that of a colleague, please inform the Secretary of Hel.A.S. (Prof. K. Tsiganis). The Society relies on this information for all mailings to the members.

5. ADVANCED ASTROPHYSICS AND SPACE PHYSICS DEGREES IN FRANCE

A number of Universities and Institutes around Paris, such as the Observatoire de Paris, the Université Pierre et Marie Curie, the Université Paris Diderot, the Université Paris-Sud, as well as individual research laboratories are participating in a Master program entitled “Astronomie, Astrophysique et Ingénierie Spatiale”. Specific information on how to be admitted at the different levels follows:

The application deadline for “M1” level is 15 June 2015 (see http://master-1.obspm.fr ). There are two different “M2” levels. An “M2 Recherche” which leads mainly to PhD studies, and an “M2 Professionnel” more oriented towards careers in space engineering. The application deadline for “M2 Recherche” is 15 June 2015 (see http://master-recherche.obspm.fr). The “M2 Professionnel” has a running application (see http://osae.obspm.fr). For graduate students who already hold a Master degree (M2), the deadline for application for a fellowship towards a PhD degree is 30 April 2015 (see http://ecole-doctorale.obspm.fr). For more information on the above please contact the Hel.A.S. members Prof. Christophe Sauty .

A number of plasma physics laboratories and universities of the Paris region, including the Université Pierre et Marie Curie, the Université Paris-Sud, the Université Versailles Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines, the Institut d’Optique and the Ecole Polytechnique participate in the challenging program of the “M2” level entitled Physique des Plasmas et de la Fusion (see http://master-plasmas-fusion.fr/ppf/). This program deals with theoretical and experimental aspects of astrophysical and space plasmas (solar and magnetospheric physics, stellar evolution, interstellar plasmas), as well as laboratory and cold plasmas. As explained above, after completion of this “M2” program, candidates may apply for a PhD fellowship.

SPaCE is a new international programme in Astrophysics of Aix-Marseille University in France. During 2 years It focuses on theoretical, applied, numerical, instrumental and observational Physics, applied to Astrophysical Sciences and Chemistry related to Space. The Master (M1 & M2) programme in astrophysics is based on e-lectures with an extensive experience of work in research. The Laboratoire d’Astrophysique de Marseille (LAM) and the Laboratoire de Physique des Interactions Ioniques et Moléculaires (PIIM) are the Master’s hosting laboratories. This very innovative programme in astrophysics aims at providing our graduate students with a strong research training, as well as a solid teaching in both fundamental and experimental topics. Applications are accepted from 1 March 2015 until 30 June 2015. For more information you may contact Prof. Veronique Buat or visit http://master-space.lam.fr.

6. UPCOMING ASTRONOMY MEETINGS IN GREECE

The following meetings are scheduled to take place in Greece during 2015-2016:
