  1. SHORT NEWS
  -------------

We would like to congratulate Dr. Angelos Vourlidas, the Instrument
Manager of KCOR, one of the two instruments on the Solar Heliospheric
Activity Research and Prediction Program (SHARPP) investigation.
SHARPP was recently selected by NASA as part of the upcoming Solar
Dynamics Observatory (SDO) mission. KCOR, a white light coronagraph,
along with an Atmospheric Imaging Assembly will study the dynamic solar
atmosphere to learn how and why the Sun's atmosphere varies.
With unprecedented time and spatial resolution, SHARPP should
develop space weather predictions for the terrestrially important
phenomena. Dr. Russell Howard of the Naval Research Laboratory,
Washington, D.C. will lead a large international team as the SHARPP
  principal investigator.

  2. JOB OPENING
  --------------

A new position of "Researcher D" [Dokimos Ereunitis D'] in
"Observational Astrophysics" has been opened at the Institute of
Astronomy and Astrophysics of the National Observatory of Athens.
The application deadline is 15 September 2002.
For more information contact Mrs. Kolliakou tel: +30 1 03490142

  3. MEMBERS IN NEW POSITIONS
  ---------------------------

Dr. Leonidas Moustakas moved from Oxford University (U.K.) to a
new postdoc position at the Space Telescope Science Institute in
  Baltimore MD, (USA).

Dr. Alexandros Kakouris moved on August 1st, 2002, from the Univ.
of Athens to the FOM Institute for Plasma Physics, Utrecht, The
Netherlands on a 2 year post-doctoral position for work on
Magnetoseismology of Accretion Disks at the Numerical Plasma
  Dynamics Group.

Dr. Yannis Papaphilippou was awarded a permanent research staff
position at the Theory Group of the European Synchrotron Radiation
  Facility at Grenoble, France.

  4. ESA INFO DAY - REGISTRATION TO EMITS
  ---------------------------------------

The General Secretariat of Research an Technology (GSRT) would
like to remind all of us that a number of research programs /
opportunities are available via the European Space Agency. In order
for greek institutes and organizations to take advantage of those
opportunities, the GSRT notes that it is essential for all members
of greek institutes to register in the "Electronic Mail Invitation
to Tender System" database (EMITS) of ESA. This can be done by
visiting the EMITS web page at:

	  http://emits.esa.int

Once there you can select the "Registration Request" link at the top
of the page and provide the information required. The service desk
of EMITS will contact you for further information. [Note that the
above mentioned web page is best viewed with Internet Explorer]

  5. ESA's TELECOMMUNICATIONS PROGRAMME ARTES - CALL FOR IDEAS 2003
  -----------------------------------------------------------------

The following announcement was sent to GSRT by P. Lo Galbo Head of
the ESA Telecommunications Department and may be of interest.

  [Dear Madam/Sir,

We would like to invite you to bring forward your ideas and
suggestions for future research and development programmes in the
area of satellite communication. This is your opportunity to
further develop your ideas in close cooperation with the
Telecommunications Team of the European Space Agency (ESA).

The present telecommunications activities of the European Space
Agency (ESA) are carried out in the framework of ARTES (Advanced
Research in Telecommunications Systems) (for more information see
  website: http://telecom.esa.int/home/index.cfm).

In order to facilitate the communication between industry and the
ARTES team, the mechanism of an open 'Call for Ideas' has been
created. This mechanism will help shape the ARTES Programme and in
particular the activities put forward in yearly work plans.

We, therefore, cordially invite you to submit your ideas by
completing a simple 'Call for Ideas' active web form before 30th
September 2002. Ideas have to be relevant for satellite
communication. The form is available on our website:

  http://telecom.esa.int/home/indexnews.cfm?TypeID=1&ContentID=11272&content=newsitem

The inputs are assessed by ESA's ARTES team supported by technical
experts and system engineers to define work plans for 2003 for the
various ARTES elements. The work plans will be published on this
  website in January 2003.]
