\centerline{\Large \rm   \underline {Second Announcement}}
\medskip

This is the second Announcement for the ``2nd Hellenic Astronomical
Meeting" to be held in Thessaloniki between June 29th and July 1st,
1995. The Scientific Organising Committee has decided to dedicate
the Conference to the late Professor John Xanthakis who passed
peacefully away, at the age of 90, on July 10, 1994.

As of May 29, 1995 we have received 165 registrations, including
41 from the Balkans and other European countries.
148 abstracts have been accepted and a number
of people have sent us their hotel registration.

A third Announcement with the list of contributed papers will be sent
early next month. If required, we may send additional updates to all
registered participants.
\medskip

\section {Location}
The Conference will take place in the hotel ``{\it Xenia-Helios}",
located in Perea, a resort village about 20 km away from Thessaloniki
(8 km from ``Macedonia" airport). Buses between Thessaloniki and Perea
run fairly frequently (every 20 minutes). A ``postscript" file with a
detailed map of the region
can be found in the URL address of the Laboratory of Astronomy of
the University of Thessaloniki: ``http://www.astro.auth.gr/elaset/2conf/"
The hotel can comfortably host about 180 participants. Its facilities
include a large auditorium, several smaller conference-rooms (for
parallel sessions), a gourmet restaurant, bar and a private beach. A
special agreement has been negotiated:\\
\centerline{Single room (half pension): 10 400 drachmas}
\centerline{Double room (half pension): 7 300 drachmas/person}
\centerline{Lunch or supper: 2 300 drachmas/person}
\section{Arrival and Departure}
You can come to Thessaloniki by car, bus, train or aeroplane. If
you arrive by bus, train or aeroplane, you can reach Perea either
by public transportation or taxi. Public buses (No. 72,
{\it Nea Mihaniona}) run every twenty
minutes. They start from ``Plateia Dikastirion", about 300m
north of the well known ``Plateia Aristotelous" and follow
the route along ``Egnatia Street - Nea Egnatia - G. Papandreou -
Airport Avenue - Perea". The Conference Hotel lies about 500m
along the shore from the bus-stop ``{\it Paralia Pereas}".
The bus fare costs 135 drachmas.

If you hire a taxi from Thessaloniki, it will cost you about 3000-3500
drachmas. From the airport, it costs about 2500-3000 drachmas.

If you come by private transportation, please follow the signs for
{\it Nea Mihaniona} and the {\it Airport}. You pass the {\it
Airport} junction (look for our Conference signs there!)
and continue towards {\it Nea Mihaniona}. The
next village, after about 8 km, is {\it Perea}. However, about
2 km before reaching Perea, please turn right (towards the sea)
at the traffic lights, following signs for the Conference.
After about 2.3 km, you reach the {\it Xenia - Helios} hotel and
park in the parking-lot infront of it. There is ample parking
space in the parking lot and around it.

Please contact the Information Desk if you need any help with
your departure.

\section {Pre-registration}
The Local Organising Committee (LOC) will do its best to ensure
that your participation runs smooth and comfortable. In order
to take care of the details of your participation we would appreciate
very much if you could fill up the form at the end of this message
(even if you have already sent us some of the requested information)
and send it to: \\

\subsection {Poster contributions}
Poster contributions will be displayed in a prominent location
during the conference. The space available for each poster
is equivalent to {\underline {six}} A4 pages.
If properly prepared, poster contributions will be included in the
{\it Proceedings} of the Conference as all other contributions.
The authors are requested to be available, close to their Poster stand,
between 15:00 and 16:00 during the first day of the Conference
(Thursday) and, if possible, during coffee breaks.

\section {Proceedings}
The Proceedings will be published in English. As mentioned earlier we
have received about 150 abstracts. This means that in order to keep
the Proceedings to about 600 pages, each accepted paper
should not exceed 4 typed pages. The full text (hard copy + diskette) of all
contributions (oral or poster) should be submitted to the Chairman
of the Scientific Organising Committee (Professor L.N. Mavridis)
{\bf before or during the Conference}. The editors would be grateful if all
contributions are submitted in LATEX. In this case, please use the simple
style ``article.sty". In all other cases please submit a camera ready
hard copy + the full text in ASCII format (about 15 words/line and
50 lines/page). For further information
please contact the Secretary of the Local Organising Committee (Assoc.
Professor J.H. Seiradakis).
A summary in Greek will be requested from the
native speakers and appreciated from all others.

\section{Cultural events}
We expect that most participants will arrive on Wednesday, June 28, 1995
afternoon or early evening. The Conference Information Desk at the hotel
will be open between 18:00 and 22:00. Please verify your registration
and pick up the Conference material. The formal sessions will start
on Thursday morning at 09:00 with the opening of the Conference. The
meeting will close on Saturday evening and we expect all participants
to depart by Sunday morning (July 2nd).

A small welcome drink will be offered on Thursday evening. The official
{\it Conference Dinner} (included in the registration fee) will be held
on Friday evening, June 30, 1995. Vegetarian items will be available
on request (please indicate your preferences in the enclosed form).
We expect that the {\it Dinner} will be followed by a performance of a local
dance ensemble.

On Saturday morning, after the end of the scientific sessions (11:00)
we are offering a guided tour at the Archaeological Museum of
Thessaloniki which, among others, hosts the famous {\it Vergina
exhibition} which includes some wonderful items from the royal tomb
of Philipp II, the father of Alexander the Great. The Museum entry costs
1500 drachmas. Transportation to the Museum is free.

After lunch, at about 15:00, we plan an excursion at the {\it Petralona
Cave}, the site where the skeleton of a prehistoric man about 150 000
years old was excavated. Please bring sturdy shoes. A 20 min walk
among stalagmites and stalactites will impress and charm everybody,
even those who are still musing about astronomical conferences.
Entrance to the cave costs 800 drachmas.
All participants will be back to Perea by 21:00,
after enjoying swimming at the Chalkidiki peninsula. Transportation
to Petralona and Chalkidiki is free. Please indicate
in the attached form if you are interested in joining the cultural events.

\section {Fees and Financial Support}
As mentioned in the first Circular, the registration
fees are 10000 drachmas (US \$ 40). This includes the Conference Dinner
and the Proceedings of the Conference. Members of the Hellenic Astronomical
Society can register free of charge as long as they have paid their
dues to the Society.

The Local Organising Committee is pleased to announce
that the {\it National Committee of Astronomy - Ethniki Astronomiki
Epitropi-}, responding to their request, has decided to offer 800 000
drachmas to support the participation of Greek astronomers. For
further information please contact:

\centerline{Ethniki Astronomiki Epitropi (Dr. K. Poulakos)}

as soon as possible (before June 6, 1995).

The National Observatory of Athens, responding to a similar
request has decided to support six members of staff and two
students working at the Observatory. Finally, it should be mentioned
that the Local Organising Committee, even now is working towards
securing financial support from local sponsors and hopes to be able
to offer limited support to Greek astronomers who have not managed
to get financial support from other sources.
