1. THE 8th CONFERENCE OF HELAS

We wish to inform all Hel.A.S. members that the deadline for submission of abstracts for the upcoming 8th conference of Hel.A.S. will be the 15th of May 2007. The conference web page is under development and it will be announced in the next newsletter.

2. JOB OPENING

There is a new position opening at the level of Researcher C at the Institute of Astronomy & Astrophysics of the National Observatory of Athens. The research area of the opening is "Observational Astrophysics with emphasis in the X-ray astronomy and Cosmology" and the application deadline is 28 March 2007. For more information contact Mrs. Ourania Koumentakou at +30-210-8109172 & +30-210-3490105.

3. MEMORIAL SERVICE FOR N. VOGLIS

A memorial service for the 40 days since the passing away of Dr. N. Voglis will take place at the church of Ag. Antonios in Aulona (Atikis) at 9:30am on Sunday 11 March 2007.

4. IKY SCHOLARSHIPS

The Greek National Institute of Fellowships (IKY) has announced its graduate and post graduate fellowship program for 2007-2008. The application deadline is March 23rd, 2007. This year there are no dedicated positions for astrophysics, but it appears that all fields of physics are merged together. There is one (1) position for graduate studies abroad and five (5) for graduate studies in Greece. Clearly this is worse than the situation of last year when there were 5 fellowships just in astrophysics and space physics. For more information on the requirements and application forms visit:

http://www.iky.gr/scholarships/ellines/

5. THE 2007 NEON OBSERVING SCHOOL

The tradition of the observing schools organized by the Network of European Observatories in the North (NEON) continues this year and it will take place in Asiago Observaatory between 4 and 18 September 2007. As was the case in the past the school will consist of introductory lectures on topics of general interest, work in small groups, execution of a real research project, and presentation of the results at the end of the school. The application deadline is April 15 2007. For more information visit:

http://eas.iap.fr/neon2007.html

6. LES HOUCHES WINTER SCHOOL ON HERCHEL

The Herschel Space Observatory will be launched by the European Space Agency in 2008. Herschel will completely open the domain of submillimeter and far infrared wavelengths to astronomy.

In order to distribute information and knowledge on the Herschel project, we have organised a winter school in Les Houches, from 23 April to 4 May 2007. This school is open to all astronomers, but especially dedicated to students and young post-docs.

The format of the school is organised such as providing ample time for training using the software tools specially prepared for preparing and analysing the observations, as well as for discussions and presentations of results. The main scientific domains which will benefit from Herschel observations will be presented by experts in the fields.

The registration deadline is 15 March 2007, and the school is limited to 60 participants. For more information visit:

7. STELLARIUM: AN OPEN SOURCE PLANETARIUM

We would like to bring to the attention of our members the availability of Stellarium, a free open source planetarium for a computer. The program, which is availble for Windows, Mac, and Linux operating systems, shows a realistic sky in 3D with a variety of very useful features. To download the program visit:

8. UPCOMING ASTRONOMY MEETINGS IN GREECE

The following meetings will take place in Greece. Please check the corresponding web page or contact the organizers by e-mail for more information.

9. ABOUT THIS NEWSLETTER

This Newsletter was sent to all members of Hel.A.S. who have e-mail access. The next edition of the Newsletter will be mailed around April 1st 2007. Please send your announcements (e.g. appointments/departures,job openings, research opportunities, awards, conferences in Greece) or comments before March 25, 2007. If you do not wish to receive future issues of this Newsletter or the e-mail address to which it was sent is not your preferred one, please inform the Secretary of Hel.A.S.

The Governing Council of Hel.A.S. has decided to produce a special issue of Hipparchos dedicated to Observatories and Telescopes in Greece, as well as Greek efforts in astronomical instrumentation and involvement in space astrophysics.

We would like to encourage anybody interested to contribute an article to contact the editorial board. The members of the board are M. Plionis (guest editor), K. Kokkotas, V. Charmandaris, D. Hatzidimitriou, P. Niarchos, J. Seiradakis, N. Stergioulas, and K. Tsinganos.

We should note that the articles should be focused on the development of infrastructure, instruments, etc. rather than on science topics. The deadline for article submission is June 15, 2007.

3. JOB OPENING

Postdoctoral Position in Astronomy/Astrophysics and Computer Cluster Administration

The Theoretical Astrophysics group at Northwestern University is seeking a qualified postdoctoral associate for a position that combines research in any of the areas described below and computer cluster administration (50%-50% time split). The position is available from September 2007.

At present the Theoretical Astrophysics group at Northwestern includes three faculty (V. Kalogera, F. Rasio, R. Taam), nine postdoctoral associates, five graduate students, and several undergraduate research students. Research interests and activities include gravitational-wave and X-ray astrophysics, black hole formation and evolution, stellar dynamics and relativistic hydrodynamics, binary stellar evolution, radio pulsars, accretion astrophysics, and extrasolar planets.

Apart from research in any of these areas, the successful applicant will also be responsible for the administration and management of a new computer cluster with about 100 quad-core compute nodes available for research by the group members. The initial appointment will be for two years and could be extended to a total of four years; the salary for the first year is set to $45,000 and competitive, high-quality benefits plans are available with the position.

For further information, contact Vicky Kalogera (vicky@northwestern.edu). Applications should include a CV, a brief description of research interests, and contact information for a minimum of two references, at least one of which can comment on the applicant's computer administration skills and experience; applications should be submitted to Sarah Beverton (beverton@northwestern.edu) by May 1, 2007. Later applications will be considered until the position is filled.
