1. SHORT NEWS

Ms. Chloe Vamvatira-Nakou recently moved from the graduate program of the Univ. of Athens to commence her PhD studies on massive star nebulae with the Herschel Space Telescope at the Departement d'Astrophysique, Geophysique et Oceanographie of the University of Liege (Belgium).

We would like to congratulate Dr. Vicky Kalogera who was recently promoted to the Haven Professor of Physics and Astronomy and was also named the Director of the newly endowed Center for Interdisciplinary Exploration and Research in Astrophysics at Northwestern University (USA).

 
2. THE 9th HELLENIC ASTRONOMICAL CONFERENCE

3. HEL.A.S. ANNUAL MEMBERSHIP FEE DUE

We would like to remind all members of Hel.A.S. that the deadline for payment of the 2009 Annual Membership Fee was August 31st. All members of the Society who have not yet paid their Membership Fee for the past year should do so as soon as possible. Members who wish to receive an invoice in order to charge their membership to a grant may request one from the Treasurer, Prof. A. Mastichiadis (treasurer@helas.gr).

As it has been mentioned in the past, the preferred method of payment is online via the secure server of the Bank of Pireaus, using a credit card or a direct bank transfer. For more details on this, as well as information on other methods of payment, please review the payment form listed bellow, or contact the Treasurer:

Please note that members who will attend the conference of the Society in Athens will be requested to pay their past dues in cash during the conference registration.

 
4. SEPTEMBER ACTIVITIES FOR THE IYA2009

In this news-item we present all activities related to the International Year of Astronomy which, to our knowledge, are scheduled in Greece this coming month. If you wish to have your IYA2009 planned activities included in this mailing please inform the Editor of the e-newsletter.

For September 2009 the following events are planned:

  • 1st of September - Observe the night sky at the city of Xanthi.

5. THE 14TH NOA SUMMER SCHOOL

Since 1996 the National Observatory of Athens under the auspices and support of the Ministry of Education has been organizing an astronomy summer school for high school students. This year the summer school is co-sponsored from the University of Athens and the Hellenic Astronomical Society and it takes place from 1-3 September 2009. 6. ASTRONOMY EVENT IN 2009 DIMITRIA FESTIVAL OF THESSALONIKI

As part of the Dimitria Festival, Imperial College Astrophysics, the Friends of Astronomy Club of Thessaloniki and the Observatory of Thessaloniki are organizing a three-day public astronomy event. Funded by the Municipality of Thessaloniki the event, which will take place on 02-05 October 2009 in Thessaloniki, is entitled "Herschel Space Observatory: Discovering the Cold Universe" and its goal is to familiarize the public with Observational Astronomy, its history and the latest developments by bringing together the foremost UK and Greek astronomers. This event is open to anyone interested in learning about Observational Astronomy and especially university students keen to pursue graduate studies in the field.
