1. SHORT NEWS

We would like to congratulate Dr. L. Moustakas, a member of our Society, who was recently promoted to lead the Astrophysics and Space Sciences Section at JPL. In this role he manages and advocates for 100 research scientists and postdocs, across Astrophysics, Heliophysics, Astronomical Instrumentation, and Laboratory Astrophysics.

2. THE 11th CONFERENCE OF HEL.A.S.

The deadline for the submission of abstracts to the 11th Conference of Hel.A.S. is now over. The conference's program has been posted at www.helas.gr/conf/2013/program_final_2013.pdf. This is the first time that our society's conference will last for three and a half days. With over 170 registered participants, 5 plenary and 14 invited talks, 70 oral and 70 poster presentations, this will be one of the most exciting Conferences organised by our Society. Please note that there is still time to register for the conference, until August 10, 2013. We advice you to visit regularly the web page of the conference for updates regarding the program, as well as the social events. Please note that on Monday, September 9, 2013, at 21:00, the Theater of New York will perform the play "The apology of Socrates", in Greek, at the premises of NOA at Thissio. The performance will be free of charge for the conference participants.

3. JOB OPENING AT NOA

Applications are invited for a 2-year research position at the National Observatory of Athens in the field of Solar Physics. Applicants should have obtained a Ph.D. in solar physics by the starting date of the appointment, which is in September 2013. The successful applicant will work in collaboration with Dr. Georgia Tsiropoula for the installation and successful operation of a small solar telescope at NOA’s premises. Interested candidates should send a CV, list of publications, and a brief description of research interests to Dr. G. Tsiropoula (georgia@noa.gr) before the 20th of August 2013. The position is funded by the Greek Secretariat of Research and Technology in the framework of the program "KRIPIS".

4. ESA's RESEARCH FELLOWSHIPS IN SPACE SCIENCE

The European Space Agency awards several postdoctoral fellowships each year. Areas of research include Planetary Science, Astronomy and Astrophysics, Solar and Solar-terrestrial Science, Plasma Physics and Fundamental Physics. The fellowships have a duration of two years and are tenable at the European Space Research and Technology Centre (ESTEC) in Noordwijk, Netherlands, or at the European Space Astronomy Centre (ESAC) in Villafranca del Castillo, near Madrid, Spain. Applications are now solicited for fellowships in Space Science to begin in the fall of 2014. The deadline for applications is 1 October 2013. More information can be found at: www.rssd.esa.int/fellowship. Questions on the scientific aspects of the ESA Fellowship in Space Science not answered in the above pages can be sent by e-mail to the fellowship coordinator, Guido De Marchi, at the address: fellowship@rssd.esa.int

5. IPAC VISITING GRADUATE FELLOWSHIPS

The Infrared Processing and Analysis Center at Caltech announces the availability of six-month graduate student fellowships, typically taking place during January-July, with some flexibility on the starting and ending dates. The program is designed to allow students from other institutions to visit IPAC-Caltech and perform astronomical research in close association with an IPAC scientist. Applicants would normally be expected to have completed preliminary course work in their graduate program and be available for research during the period of the award. Funding from IPAC will be provided for a 6-month period via monthly stipends, plus relocation expenses. The application deadline is October 1, 2013. For more information visit:
