  7. About this Newsletter
1. SHORT NEWS

We would like to congratulate Dr. Emmanouil Angelakis, a member of our Society, who was recently elected Vice-President of the European Astronomical Society and wish him every success in his new duties.

2. The 12th Conference of HEL.A.S.

As announced in the previous Newsletter, the 12th Conference of HEL.A.S. will take place in Thessaloniki by the end of June, 2015. The provisional dates are June 29 (Monday) to July 3 (Friday). The GC is currently evaluating different proposals for the meeting venue and is expected to take a final decision in due time.

3. The EWASS 2016 in Athens

Following a proposal by the Hellenic Astronomical Society (Hel.A.S.), the European Astronomical Society (EAS) has decided to hold the European Week for Astrophysics and Space Science (EWASS) 2016 in Athens, 4 - 8 July 2016. Members of the Hel.A.S. are encouraged to become members of the EAS at the latest next year (the annual fee is 40 euro for ordinary members and 20 euro for junior or senior members), so that they have the right to apply for registration fee waiver (estimated at 350 - 400 euro) at EWASS 2016.

4. Recent decisions of the GC

During its last meeting, the GC initiated a discussion on upgrading the Society's web-site. The primary goal is to install an automated notifications system so that, apart from the monthly Newsletter, our members could be notified promptly about proposal calls and other announcements (e.g. job openings, ESA / EU proposals) with short and strict deadlines. In the meantime, such information will be regularly posted on the web-site, under the “Greece and ESA” link and we urge our members to be visiting this link on a regular basis.

The GC also decided that it is in the best interest of our Society to offer some financial assistance to its Junior members, who wish to attend international meetings in order to present their research but lack adequate funding. To this end, the GC will issue regular Calls for Applications for Junior Member Travel Grants on the order of 250-300 euros each, twice a year. We expect to be able to provide two grants per call, so that the total annual cost does not exceed 1,200 euros. All applications will be reviewed thoroughly. The exact rules of the reviewing process and dates for the 1st Call will be examined in the next GC meeting and will be announced in a forthcoming Newsletter.

5. IMPRS Call for PhD Applications

The International Max-Planck Research School on Astrophysics (IMPRS) in Garching/Munich (Bavaria, Germany) is soliciting applications for its PhD program. The deadline for applications is November 15, 2014. For more information on the program and applications procedure please visit:
