  1. SHORT NEWS
  -------------
 
   During the 15th General Assembly of Hel.A.S., which took place on
  Friday, June 16, 2000 in the Laboratory of Astronomy of the University
  of Athens, the Report of the Council and the Treasurer's Accounts for the
  period June 1998 to June 2000 were received and adopted. Prior to the
  Assembly Professor Emeritous N. Economou, from the University of Thessaloniki,
  presented an excellent account on the ancient clockwork mechanism found,
  about a century ago, in a shipwreck ashore the island of Antikythera.
 
 
  2. THE NEW COUNCIL AND AUDITORS OF HEL.A.S
  ------------------------------------------
 
   In the elections that followed the General Assembly of June 16, 2000,
  the members of Hel.A.S. voted for a new President, a new Council and new
  Auditors. The results are as follows:
 
      President: J.H. Seiradakis, University of Thessaloniki
 
      Council:   S. Avgoloupis, University of Thessaloniki   
                 N. Kylafis, University of Crete
                 E. Livaniou-Rovithis, University of Athens
                 P. Niarchos, University of Athens
                 E. Plionis, National Observatory of Athens
                 H. Varvoglis, University of Thessaloniki
 
      Auditors:  K. Kokkotas, University of Thessaloniki
                 N. Stergioulas, University of Thessaloniki
                 E. Theodossiou, University of Athens
 
 
  3. NEW MEMBERS
  --------------
 
     Nine new members were elected during the General Assembly of June 16, 
  2000 of our Society:
 
   - Ordinary Members:
     Dr. Panagiotis Boumis, National Observatory of Athens
     Dr. Konstantinos Gontikakis, Academy of Athens
     Dr. Konstantinos Karoubalos, University of Athens
     Dr. Nikos Prantzos, Institut d'Astrophysique de Paris, France
   - Junior Members:
     Mr. Athanasios Akylas, National Obseravtory of Athens 
     Miss. Olga Bitzaraki, University of Athens
     Mr. Kosmas Gazeas, University of Athens
     Miss. Mary Koukouli, Oxford University
   - Associate Member:
     Mr. Antonios Antoniou, Lyceum of Chalkida
 
    Finally the General Assembly changed the status of our old member, Mr.
   Stylianos Argyropoulos, from Junior to Associate.
    Taking into account the above new colleagues, presently our Society has
   222 members (177 Ordinary, 41 Junior and 4 Associate members). The

   directory of the web pages of Hel.A.S.
 
 
   4. JOB OPENING
   --------------
 
  The National Observatory of Athens announced an opening for the position of
  the Director of the Institute of Astronomy and Astrophysics. The deadline for
  applications is July 20, 2000. For further information please contact
