the new number in the online directory record of each member.

The pre-doctoral studentship for solar observations, announced in our
previous E-Newsletter, is still open. For further information please

  3. OPTICON: AN EU FUNDED OPTICAL INFRARED COORDINATION NETWORK
  --------------------------------------------------------------

The Optical Infrared Coordination Network (OPTICON), funded by the
European Union, aims in bringing together Europe's providers of astronomical
infrastructures together with research institutes from the larger
  countries.

For more information on OPTICON and its activities visit:

  4. LEADING EUROPEAN RESEARCH ORGANIZATIONS JOIN FORCES IN EIROFORUM
  -------------------------------------------------------------------

Since the early 1950s, a number of research infrastructures and
laboratories have been developed and deployed within Europe by European
  Intergovernmental Research Organisations (EIRO).

Seven of these organisations have set up a co-ordination and
collaboration group (EIROFORUM) with their top executives (Directors
General or equivalent) as members. They include CERN (particle
physics), EMBL (molecular biology), ESA (space activities), ESO
(astronomy and astrophysics), ESRF (synchrotron radiation), ILL
  (neutron source) and EFDA (fusion).

A primary goal of EIROFORUM is to play an active and constructive
role in promoting the quality and impact of European Research.

  5. ADC'S NEW DATA MINING RESOURCES FOR SPACE SCIENCES
  -----------------------------------------------------

Data mining is fast becoming a relevant and required activity for
the exploration of large astronomical databases. Data mining is
already a mature discipline in the commercial sector, and the
scientific community can take advantage of many years of experience
  and developments already accumulated there.
To facilitate and to inform these developments within the
astronomical data centers and data user communities, The Astronomical
Data Center (ADC) has compiled a selection of data mining resources
for space science. These are available at this URL:
