  1. SHORT NEWS
  -------------

    The Council of Hel.A.S. would like to wish to all members and
  their families Merry Christmas and a Happy and Healthy New Year.

    The latest issue of Hipparchos newsletter has just been sent to
  all members. Check your mailboxes!  For a sneak preview, you may
  download it as a PDF file from the web site of Hel.A.S.


  2. JENAM 2002
  -------------

    The next Joint European and National Astronomy Meeting, entitled
  "The Unsolved Universe: Challenges for the Future", will take place
  in Porto, Portugal from September 3 to 7, 2002. This will be the
  11th meeting of the European Astronomical Society and the 12th
  National Meeting of the Portuguese Astronomical Society.

  3. MEMBERS IN NEW POSITIONS
  ---------------------------

    Dr. Christos Tsagas recently moved, from the University of
  Portsmouth (U.K.), to a new postdoc position at the University
  of Cape Town (South Africa).


  4. THE ESA/ESO ASTRONOMY EXCERCISE SERIES
  -----------------------------------------

    The European Space Agency and the European Southern Observatory
  have produced a series of astronomical exercises for use in high
  school. The prime object of the series is to present various small
  projects that will transmit some of the excitement and satisfaction
  of scientific discovery to students. For more information visit:
