It is customary to schedule a talk before the General Assembly of the Society and the elections.
This year's talk will be given by Jason Spyromilio, Hel.A.S. member and Senior Scientist at ESO.
Title of the talk: "The European Extremely Large Telescope".
Abstract: The E-ELT project has concluded the design phase and construction activitiesare planned to start in 2013.
The talk will present the scientific drivers for the telescope and its first generation of instrumentation,
the technical status of the design and the extensive prototyping that has taken place.
Short CV of J. Spyromilio: Dr Jason Spyromilio received his PhD from Imperial College. He has
been a researcher and instrument scientist at the Anglo-Australian
Observatory. Since 1994 he is an infrared astronomer at the European
Southern Observatory. He led the re-commissioning of the New Technology
Telescope and the commissioning effort at the Very Large Telescope at
Paranal. He has been deputy-director and director of the La Silla
Paranal Observatory. He headed the European Extremely Large Telescope
project office during the design phase. He is an active researcher
studying supernovae. He was a member of the High-Z supernova team that
discovered the acceleration of the expansion of the universe and is
co-author of over 200 papers with over 13500 citations.
